RTE signs scientific co-operation agreement with TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company), Japan's leading electrical utility.

In Tokyo, on 1 November 2001, André MERLIN, Chief Executive Officer of RTE and Nobuya MINAMI, Chairman of TEPCO (1), signed an international co-operation agreement under which the two companies have agreed to actively exchange their experiences and best practices in a number of different areas.

Among the topics of common interest chosen are the impact of the opening of the electricity markets to competition on the structures of power companies, power transmission tariffs, the security of power systems, network maintenance policies, the development of metering systems and the installation of optical fibres on transmission networks (2).

This co-operation will take the form of exchanges of information, expert missions and, if possible, joint research and development.

Thus, after agreements already concluded with PJM, the largest network operator in the United States (in December 2000), and with the transmission subsidiary of EnBW (in August 2001), RTE now has a third international partner enabling it to develop and enhance its expertise.

1 - TEPCO, the leading electrical utility in Japan with a peak capacity of 59,000 MW and sales revenue of 4,900 billion Yen in 2000
2 - 45,000 km have already been deployed on its own network
