On Thursday, 9 January 2003, France reached its second historical electricity consumption level.

On Thursday, 9 January 2003, France almost equalled its electricity consumption record of the previous day with a value of 80,120 MW at 7.04 p.m.

On Wednesday, 8 January at 7.03 p.m., France had set its electricity consumption record with a value of 80,190 MW.

The still colder-than-normal winter weather conditions go to explain this second record power consumption level. On Thursday evening, average temperatures in France continued to hover about 6°C lower than the usual seasonal values.

At the time the record was bettered, there still remained an available capacity margin of more than 2,500 MW and, in addition, the French network exported about 5,500 MW to the neighbouring interconnected countries.

RTE wishes to state that the consumption curve can be consulted in real time on its Web site, under the section ?Life of the Power System ? Electricity consumption ?.
