The French and Spanish power transmission system operators, RTE (Réseau de Transport d'Electricité) and REE (Red Electrica España), have strengthened cooperation measures in order to restore normal service to the affected electricity grids in South-West France and Northern Spain.

In the Perpignan region, where the power supply is still extremely fragile with just one of the three 400 kV lines that supply the city still operating, the lights have remained on largely thanks to vital power from across the border in Spain.

However, the situation remains delicate: consequently, the cross-border interconnection is being used solely for mutual backup and commercial transactions have been suspended.

Specialists from both operators are exchanging real-time information on infrastructure damage and repair requirements as it is gathered by field staff. Both companies are pooling their expertise, resources and intervention groups in an effort to restore the power supply in both countries as quickly as possible.

The new interconnection between France and Spain, which is set to enter service in 2013, will further improve the possibilities for electricity exchanges and mutual backup between the two countries, particularly in very tight situations such as that currently being experienced.
