André Merlin, chief executive officer of RTE, was today re-elected President of the European Energy and Transport Forum, following the constitutive meeting in Brussels.
The members of the Forum, whom the European Commission has recently appointed, have reaffirmed their confidence in André Merlin, who was originally elected President when the Forum was created in 2002.
"I am very pleased with the work carried out by the Forum. In only two years it has presented many opinions on important matters to the Commission as well as providing guidelines for debate on the future of our policies. It is essential to guarantee the continuity of this work and to maintain the momentum created by this dialogue between the Commission and the relevant players in the public arena" said Loyola de Palacio, Vice-President and Commissioner for Energy and Transport.
The Forum was set up by the European Commission as a consultative body, to advise it in drawing up policies on land, sea, river and air-based transport, as well as on energy (electricity, gas, coal, fuel-oil, nuclear, renewable energies). It helps the Commission monitor debates and initiatives, particularly those launched for the Green Paper on the safety of the EU's energy supply, and the White Paper on European transport policy for 2010.
The European Energy and Transport Forum comprises 34 full members and 34 alternates, covering a wide range of areas of activity within the energy and transport sectors: operators (energy producers, transporters and industrials), infrastructure and network operators, users and consumers, trade unions, environmental protection representatives, and academics.
A former student at the Ecole Polytechnique, Mr André Merlin graduated from the SUPELEC, France's Higher Institute for Electricity Studies, in 1967. He has been, within the EDF group, the chief executive officer of RTE since 4th May 2000. He is also the President of the Association of European Transmission System Operators (ETSO), and the President of the French Committee of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE).
