Life of the power system / Electricity consumption in France.

France reached a new electricity consumption peak on Wednesday, 8 January 2003.

A new electricity consumption peak was reached on Wednesday, 8 January 2003, with a value of 80,190 MW at 7.03 p.m.

The previous record, set on Tuesday, 7 January 2003 at 78,810 MW was bettered by nearly 2%, and that of 17 December 2001 was beaten by 4%.

The persistence of colder-than-normal weather conditions goes to explain this new record value. On Wednesday evening, average temperatures in France were about 5.6°C lower than the usual seasonal values.

Some regions did more than their share in setting this record. The Ile de France and Normandy regions, with a total power consumption of 20,320 MW, exceeded by 10% their previous record, which was 18,600 MW in 2002. The consumption of the Ile de France region alone reached 15,820 MW yesterday evening, i.e. nearly 20% of French consumption. The western part of France, with a value of 14,200 MW, witnessed its consumption rise by more than 7%. The Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne regions, with 8,960 MW, slightly exceeded their previous record, which was 8,840 MW. As concerns the other French regions, even if the needs of the consumers are substantial, they remain well below their respective record figures.

At the time the record was bettered, there still remained an available capacity margin of more than 1,500 MW and, in addition, the French network exported about 5,500 MW to the neighbouring interconnected countries.

RTE forecasts for the 9th of January are close to these record values which could be bettered again this evening at around 7 p.m.

RTE wishes to state that the consumption curve can be consulted in real time on its Web site, www.rte-france.com - under the section "Life of the Power System ? Electricity Consumption".

Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE), the French Transmission System Operator, created on 1 July 2000, is an independent entity within EDF and is entrusted with the task of operating, maintaining and developing the HV and EHV electricity transmission network supplying the power distributors (EDF GDF SERVICES and local distribution companies) and eligible consumers (major industrial customers). This network consists of 100,000 km of lines with a voltage between 63,000 Volts and 400,000 Volts. RTE has a work force of 8,000 people and its sales revenue came to 3.726 billion Euros en 2001.
